John Franklin Bardin was an author and journalist born in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father was a wealthy merchant and Bardin had a sheltered upbringing attending Walnut High School in his hometown before studying engineering at the University of Cincinnati. While he was at university, his sister contracted an incurable blood disease and his father died of heart failure. Less than a year later, Bardin had to interrupt his studies in order to support his mother who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
