Bauer, Belinda

As a child, the British author Belinda Bauer spent ten years in South Africa during apartheid. Her father was a dentist there and Belinda dreamed of becoming a jockey. When she and her mother returned to Britain they left their comfortable lifestyle and started new, less prosperous, life in the West Country. Bauer went to the University of Cardiff and remained in Wales after graduation, working as a journalist. After having seen one terrible film too many in the 1990s, she decided to write a script of her own. The Locker Room won the Carl Foreman/Bafta Award for Young British Screenwriters, and she continued as a screenwriter for another ten years.
