Alan Bradley was born in Toronto, Canada. He grew up with his mother and two sisters in the town of Cobourg, about one hundred kilometres from Toronto. His father left the family when the author was a small child. He was a sickly child and learned to read at an early age. He studied engineering, specialising in electronic systems for television and radio, and eventually moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in central Canada where he was Director of Television Engineering for twenty-five years. He joined creative writing societies there and socialised with local authors. He also wrote many short stories that were published in literary magazines and broadcast on CBC Radio.
