Emily Brontë was younger than Charlotte and older than Anne Brontë. The sisters were brought up together with their brother Branwell in Haworth Vicarage on the Yorkshire moors. After the death of their mother, the children were looked after by an aunt and Charlotte. Emily spent a year together with her sister at the notorious Cowan Bridge School (1824–25), after which the children were educated at home where there was a well-stocked library. Emily and Charlotte later attended Roe Head School, but they soon became homesick and returned to Haworth.
