Dan Brown is an American author born as Daniel Brown in Exeter, New Hampshire. His father was a teacher of mathematics and wrote textbooks, and his mother was a cantor. Both were active in their local Episcopalian church. Their three sons inherited their mother’s love of music and their father’s interest in puzzles, mysticism, ciphers and codes; there is an abundance of these in Dan Brown’s books. Brown was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy where his father taught, and after graduating in 1982 he read English and Spanish at Amherst College, Massachusetts. After spending 1985 reading history of art in Seville, Spain, he graduated from Amherst in 1986.
