Bruce Chatwin was an English novelist and legendary travel writer. His father, Charles Chatwin, owned a law practice in Birmingham where Chatwin grew up, but while his father served with the Royal Naval Reserve during the war his mother Margharita was staying with her mother in Sheffield, where Bruce was born in 1940. He attended Marlborough College and graduated in 1958. His great interest in antiques earned him a job at Sotheby's in London where he quickly rose from porter/cataloguer and expert on impressionism to becoming one of the company's youngest directors ever. In 1966, he left to read archaeology in Edinburgh.
