Gilbert Keith Chesterton was a British author and critic born in Kensington, London, as the oldest son of a retired estate agent. After attending St. Paul’s School he studied at the Slade School of Art and later English Literature at University College London without graduating. He reviewed books in the monthly magazine Bookman, and between 1896 and 1902 he worked for various London publishers. Chesterton wrote a substantial column for the Daily News between 1901 and 1913 and between 1905 and 1936 in the Illustrated London News; he allegedly only missed two issues in twenty-five years. He published the magazine G.K’s Weekly between 1925 and 1936 and he later broadcast weekly for the BBC. He published a couple of poetry collections in 1900, and in 1901 he married Frances Blogg. The couple lived for many years at Beaconsfield where Chesterton died in 1936.
