British crime writer, born in Carlisle in Cumbria, England. When M.W. (Michael William) ‘Mike’ Craven was still a child, the family moved to Newcastle in Tyne and Wear, where he grew up. As a 16-year-old, he tired of school, and – mainly by chance – joined the army. He spent the next ten years moving from place to place in military service, but says himself that most of his time was occupied with raking leaves on the barracks grounds, mainly in Germany.
