Dangarembga, Tsitsi

Author and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga was born in Mutoko, Rhodesia, today Zimbabwe. Because Dangarembga spent her formative years in England, where her parents went to university, she was brought up speaking English instead of Shona. By the time the family returned to Rhodesia in 1965 she had forgotten most of her mother tongue, and she had to pick it up again at the Mutare mission school. She was further educated at an American convent school, in 1977 she studied medicine at Cambridge and in 1980 she dropped out, just before Rhodesia became independent.
