The Canadian author Roberson Davies was born in Thamesville, Ontario. His father, William Davies, had moved to Canada from Wales when the family textile business started to fail. He started the Peterborough Journal, went on to become a successful newspaper owner and later senator. Robertson Davies allegedly earned his first 25 cents when he, eleven years old, reported a local event in the newspaper. His mother, Florence McKay, was a strict Presbyterian from a family of British royalists who had emigrated from New York to Canada during the Civil War.
