The German author Karen Duve was born in Hamburg. After she graduated from upper-secondary school in 1981, she worked as a taxi driver and as a proof-reader. She began to write short stories and decided to become a full-time author in 1990. She has won several literary awards and she has been a writer in residence at Ledig House, OMI, New York. Duve moved to a farm near Berlin in 2009.
