Michael Ende was born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. His father was one of the first German surrealist painters, and Michael was raised in Munich among other painters, sculptors and writers. As a young man he was strongly influenced by his father's paintings and his interest in esoteric and religious subjects. After the Nazis had banned his work, his wife trained as a physiotherapist in order to provide for the family.
