Swedish author, born and raised in a nonconformist environment at Hjoggböle, Bureå, Västerbotten. His father died early, and Per Olov Enquist, an only child, was raised by his mother, Maja (née Lindgren), a pious elementary-school teacher and devout member of the Evangelical Mission. The family later moved to the nearby village of Sjöbotten where mother and son lived in accommodation over the school.
