Galsworthy, John

John Galsworthy was born at Kingston Hill, the Galsworthy family estate in Surrey. His father was a successful barrister, and his son was expected to follow in his footsteps. After attending a number of public schools he graduated from New College, Oxford, and began to work at his father's legal firm where he was occasionally sent abroad. During a voyage in the South Seas he befriended Joseph Conrad who was first mate on the ship he was travelling on.
