Amitav Ghosh is among the most prominent of a generation of Anglo-Indian writers that came to the fore in the 1980s. He was born in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), and since his father was a diplomat, he also spent part of his early years in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
