The Swiss author Friedrich Glauser was born in Vienna. His mother was Austrian and his father was from Switzerland. Glauser's life can best be described as a series of disasters. His mother died when he was four years old, his father remarried and young Friedrich had a hard time adapting to his father's strict regime. He was sent to boarding school in Switzerland and was sent down, officially for stealing, but he claimed it was because he had written a critical review in the school magazine about a poetry collection written by one of his teachers.
