South-African novelist born in Springs, now in the province of Gauteng, (part of what was formerly the Transvaal), not far from Johannesburg. Her father, Isidore Gordimer, was a Jewish jeweller from Latvia , then part of the Russian Empire, who had fled the Russian pogroms. Gordimer's mother, Nan Myers, was born in Britain, but had emigrated with her Jewish family as a child. Both parents were secularised Jews.
