The Icelandic author Einar Már Guðmundsson was born in Reykjavik. He read literature and history at university there and continued his studies in Copenhagen where he lived for six years. He has also lived and worked in Norway and France. He now lives with his wife and five children in Reykjavik. During the 2008–2011 financial crisis he headed the popular protests that demanded the government's resignation and the election of a new government. He describes Icelandic society during this period in Hvita bókin (2009). He has been a full-time author since 1980.
