Jane Harper was born in Manchester, England. When she was eight years old she moved with her family to Australia. For six years, she lived in Boronia, Victoria, and during this period she became an Australian citizen. She returned to the UK aged 14 with her family and lived for a while in Hampshire before taking a degree in literature and history at the University of Kent. She then embarked on a career as a journalist. She worked for many years at the Hull Daily Mail before moving back to Australia and working as journalist there.
