Richard Hull is a pseudonym for the English chartered accountant Richard Henry Sampson. He was born and grew up in London, but in his youth spent short periods in Wales too, where his father owned an estate. Richard attended Rugby School in Warwickshire, and gained a scholarship to study Mathematics at Trinity College in Cambridge. Before he had time to start his studies, the First World War broke out, he was conscripted and spent three years in France as an officer in an infantry battalion.
