Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan, but he grew up in Guildford, Surrey. He has lived in the UK since 1960. His father, a Japanese oceanographer, arrived in England on a research assignment, but the family stayed on. While Ishiguro was still at school he was determined to become a musician, and he went from one London record company to the next with his demo tapes.
