A versatile English writer and playwright, F. Tennyson Jesse (1888–1958) also worked as a journalist, drawer, and amateur criminologist. She was known under a few variations of her name – born Wynifried Margaret Jesse, her given name often spelled Winifred. As a journalist, she sometimes called herself Wynifried Margaret Tennyson, though her obituaries mentioned her as Fryniwyd Tennyson Jesse Harwood – from 1918 to her death she was married to businessman, dramatist and theatre manager Harold Marsh Harwood. In the family, she was simply called Fryn, and with just one exception all of her books were published under the name F. Tennyson Jesse.
