The German/Austrian novelist, essayist and critic Daniel Kehlmann was born in Munich. His mother was the German actress Dagmar Mettler-Kehlmann and his father, Michael Kehlmann, a famous Austrian theatre director. In 1981, the family moved to Vienna where Kehlmann attended a Jesuit school. He then read philosophy and literature at the University of Vienna between 1993 and 1999. He abandoned his dissertation on Immanuel Kant when he became a full-time author. Kehlmann has taught poetics at several German universities. He lives with his family in Vienna.
