English author and journalist, born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, approximately 20 km north of London. His father, Brian B. Kelly, had a senior position, Chief Superintendent, with the Metropolitan Police in London. His grandfather had also worked as a police officer. In 1963, the family moved to Barnet from London, where Jim Kelly attended Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School and Finchley Catholic Grammar School. In 1975, he started studying Geography at Sheffield University, but his great interest was to write, and he says that he probably spent more time with the university newspaper Darts than with his studies.
