Imre Kertész was a Hungarian author born in Budapest to a secular Jewish family. He was widely translated and one of Hungary's best-known authors. All Kertész's works are informed by his experiences of the Second World War. He has said that, "All you can write about after Auschwitz is Auschwitz".
