British author born as Joseph Rudyard Kipling in Bombay where his father was the Principal as well as the Professor of Architectural Sculpture at Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art before he became Curator of the Lahore Museum. At the age of six, Rudyard Kipling was sent to school in England, and he spent the next five years boarding with a family in Southsea. He would later use his memories of this unhappy period in his life in his books. In 1878, he was admitted to the United Services College in North Devon, but because of bad eyesight and poor school results, he was not considered fit for a military career. Instead, he began to write poetry and edit the school magazine. In 1881 his parents published a booklet with his poems entitled Schoolboy Lyrics without asking his permission.
