Barbro Lindgren grew up in Ängby outside Stockholm. Her father was an engineer, while her mother, who had attended Konstfack, mainly took care of the five children. Barbro describes herself as a sensitive child with a very strong need for freedom. She discovered the world early on, and since she, according to her own statement, did not like playing very much, she talked with people instead, especially adults and older people. Already as a child, she both drew and wrote much. Between the years 1955-58, she attended the advertisement program at Konstfack, in order to next continue for a year at Konstakademien before dropping out. For a few years, she worked with layout and advertisement, before she eventually began writing. She married and got two sons, who now have grown up and have their own children. After having had a summer cottage on Öland for many years, she now lives permanently on the island.
