The French author Pierre Magnan grew up in Manosque at the centre of the department Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, an isolated, deprived rural part of Provence where old customs still prevail. He left school at the age of twelve and became a printer’s apprentice. It was around this time that he met the famous pacifist Jean Giono, who became his mentor and who introduced him to the world of literature.
