Naguib Mahfouz was born in Cairo as the youngest child of five boys and two girls. His family was of Muslim middle-class origin and lived in the old neighborhood of el-Gamaleyya until 1924, when they moved to the newly-built district of el-Abbaseyya in northeastern Cairo. These areas of his childhood and adolescence are important environments in many of Mahfouz works.
