Romanian author of Jewish descent born in Suceava, Bukovina, in northern Romania. He and his family were brought to a concentration camp in Transnistria, in present-day Ukraine, when the region's entire Jewish population was deported by the Romanian Fascist government in 1941. He returned to his hometown in 1945 together with the family members who had survived the camp.
