Henning Georg Mankell was a Swedish playwright and author. From the 1990s onwards, he won international renown for his crime novels. When Mankell was christened in Stockholm, he was given the name of his grandfather, the composer and critic Henning Mankell (1868–1930). His mother left when he was one year old, and the following year his father moved with his children to Sveg in the province of Härjedalen where he was appointed district judge. Mankell did not see his mother again until he was fifteen years old, and he never bonded with her.
