The English author Hilary Mary Mantel (born Thompson) was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, and grew up in Hadfield. The family had roots in Ireland and Hilary went to a Catholic school. Her father disappeared from the family when Hilary was eleven years old, and she took her stepfather’s surname.
