Juan Marsé Carbó, born Juan Faneca Roca, was a Spanish novelist, journalist and screenwriter from Barcelona. His biological parents were house servants, but his mother died in childbirth and soon afterwards he was adopted by the Marsé family. The author was very fond of the almost Dickensian story his adoptive mother often recounts about his adoption. Juan’s biological father was working as a taxi driver, and as he was driving a couple from a clinic where they had just lost their baby, he told them how he had just lost his wife, and that was how the unfortunate couple came to adopt the motherless boy. A more plausible story is that the two couples got to know each other through a Catalan pro-independence group.
