Guy de Maupassant was born at the castle of Miromesnil, not far from Dieppe in Normandie. His family was of noble lineage but was poor. The castle did not belong to the family, but they happened to be lodged there for a short period of time. In any event, it gave their son a birth place consistent with his station.
