American author, playwright and screenwriter born as Charles Joseph McCarthy Jr. Because of the family's Irish roots his name was later changed to Cormac (Charles) after Cormac mac Airt, according to medieval legend one of the High Kings of Ireland. When he was four years old he moved with his family from Providence, Rhode Island to Knoxville, Tennessee. His father, Joseph McCarthy Sr. was a lawyer. His mother looked after the couple's six children. McCarthy has said that he had more hobbies than any other child and that he hated his classroom at school.
