Ian Russel McEwan is an English author and screenwriter born in Aldershot, Hampshire. His father was a major, and Ian McEwan spent his early childhood in Singapore and Tripoli. The time he remembers best is the period the family lived in Tripoli when he was about ten years old. After returning to England McEwan read English literature at the University of Sussex, followed by a creative writing programme founded by Malcolm Bradbury and Angus Wilson at the University of East Anglia. He was awarded a PhD in English Literature in 1971. After living in Oxford for twenty years he moved to London in 2002.
