American author born in New York to German parents – Miller did allegedly not learn English until he started school. After briefly attending City College of New York, Henry Miller had a number of short-term jobs. The longest employment was between 1920 and 1925 when he was personnel manager at Western Union. He lived in Paris between 1930 and 1939 and returned to the United States when the war broke out. He moved to California in 1942 and from that on he mostly lived at Big Sur. Miller married his first wife in 1917 and his fifth in 1967. He was also an accomplished watercolourist who exhibited his work in the United States and abroad. Miller died at Pacific Palisades, California, in 1980.
