The American author Thomas Mullen was born on Rhode Island. He was educated at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a secondary school inside a Benedictine monastery. Mullen was encouraged to write by his teachers, many of them monks and priests. So he applied to a course in Creative Writing at Oberlin College in Ohio, but wasn’t accepted, and instead graduated with a double major in History and English at the college.
