Nádas, Péter

Péter Nádas is Hungary's most famous internationally acclaimed author. He is of Jewish descent, born in Budapest. Although his parents, László Nádas and Klára Tauber, were communists and members of the resistance during the war, Péter and his brother were christened in a Calvinist church. When the Nazi-inspired Arrow Cross party came to power in Hungary, Klára Tauber fled Budapest together with her sons, but returned before the bloody battle over the city began. Péter Nádas has recounted his first, dramatic memories. In 1944, when he was two years old, many houses, including the one where he lived, were burned down during the bombings.
