Phillips, Caryl

British author born on St. Kitts in the West Indies from where his parents joined the millions that have crossed the Atlantic over the centuries. Caryl Phillips was only a baby when his parents settled in Leeds, England. He read English Literature at Queen's College, Oxford , graduating in 1979. During this period he directed several plays and worked as a stagehand. He has written for the stage, radio, television and film. Apart from being a novelist, playwright and essayist, he has enjoyed a distinguished academic career. In 2005 he became Professor of English at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut and he alternately resides in New York and London.
