One of America's most celebrated authors, Thomas Pynchon, grew up in Glen Cove on Long Island together with his brother John and sister Judith. His father was the engineer and industrialist Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, Sr. (1907–1995), his mother's name was Katherine Frances Bennet Pynchon (1909–1996). His old New England family has provided with a great deal of material for his books.
