Later the same year he moved to Canada where he attended the University of Windsor, Ontario, studying for an MA in English and creative writing (Joyce Carol Oates was his mentor), graduating in 1975. He returned to the UK briefly, but was unable to find work so he returned to Canada to continue his studies. He was awarded a PhD in English from York University, Toronto, in 1983.
