Mercè Rodoreda was born in Barcelona. Catalan was her native language. There are only scant biographical details available about her life, which to a large extent is due to the fact that she was a very reserved person who was reluctant to allow strangers to get too close. Also her closest friends have indicated that she was a person with strong integrity. It is, however, clear that, when very young, she was married off to an uncle and that they had a son. Later, she broke with and left her family and met another man, Armand Obiols, he too a Catalan author. Together they would spend the main part of their lives in exile.
