The Finnish journalist and novelist Matti Rönkä was born and raised in Kuusjärvi – today part of Outokumpu– near the Russian border in northern Karelia. He later moved to Helsinki where he attended the Helsingin Sanomat school for journalism. In 1989, he was awarded a degree in social studies at the University of Helsinki. In 1990, he was employed at the state television company YLE where he worked as a television presenter. He later became known as "the voice of Finland".
