Irish author and Nobel Prize laureate born in Dublin to a middle-class family. His father was an alcoholic and his mother reputedly had little interest in her children. Shaw moved to London in 1876 where he worked as a clerk and as a journalist, and began to write. He had little schooling, but made up for it by spending a great deal of time at the British Museum.
