The Icelandic author Jón Kalman Stefánsson grew up in Reykjavik, but also spent a lot of time in the countryside. After school he had different jobs including one gutting fish. For a while he was in the field of physics and was interested in astronomy, but realised that it was the poetry behind the physics that appealed to him. "Scientists and artists have one thing in common, and that is doubt. Their primary purpose is to extend boundaries."
