The Italian author, scholar, translator and journalist Antonio Tabucchi was born in Pisa where he also studied at university. He travelled extensively, soon fell in love with Portugal, and in 1969 he graduated with a thesis on surrealism in Portugal. He began to teach literature in Portuguese at the University of Bologna in 1973 and in Genoa in 1978. He was employed at the Italian Institute in Lisbon in 1987, and in 1991 he became Professor of Portuguese in Siena.
