English crime reporter and very productive author of detective stories. Between 1932 and 1946 he published 49 novels and two collections of short stories under his own name, J. (John) V. (Victor) Turner, and the pseudonyms Nicholas Brady and David Hume. Little is known about his private life. He was born in Manchester, but the year of his birth is uncertain: some sources give 1900, but others – more recent and including relatives – give 1905. When he was a child, the family moved to Staffordshire, but he attended Warwick School in Warwickshire until, at the age of 16, he got a job on a local paper. He was ambitious, wanted to make a career, and after a few years moved to London.
