Patrick Victor Martindale White was an Australian author and Nobel Prize laureate born in London to a family of wealthy Australian cattle ranchers. His father, Victor Martindale White, was Anglo-Australian and his mother, Ruth Withycombe was English. The family returned to Australia shortly after Patrick’s birth and he grew up in Sydney. He was a sickly child, and he suffered from asthma, which meant that he started to read and write from an early age. He was also interested in drama.
