The crime novelist Robert Wilson was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire. His father was a Royal Airforce fighter pilot, and the family often moved between air force bases. When Robert was six years old the family was living in France where he started school. A year later he was enrolled in an English school where he enjoyed books and sport. He graduated with good grades. When he was nineteen years old, he was seriously injured in a car crash and had to abandon any hopes for a sports career. He was awarded a degree in English from Oxford University in 1979.
